Giant Crocodylian Predator Dominated Miocene South America

Over 10 million years ago, South America's Miocene ecosystem teemed with colossal herbivores and formidable predators. A vast lake sprawled across the continent, sustaining giant turtles, crocodylians, and an array of land-dwelling hunters. Among these predators-anacondas, saber-toothed mammals, terror birds, and sebecids-new research highlights the crocodylians as the most influential group, particularly in hunting large prey.

## The Dominance of Crocodylians in a Giant-Prey Ecosystem

The lake's shores hosted a diverse array of herbivores, including giant ground sloths, glyptodonts (heavily armored relatives of armadillos), and several ungulate groups. Some of these ungulates, like astrapotheres and toxodontids, grew to enormous sizes, weighing over a metric ton. This abundance of large prey supported equally massive predators, with crocodylians emerging as the top hunters.

Oscar Wilson, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki, explains that the sheer volume of prey suggests mammalian predators alone could not have sustained the ecosystem. Instead, crocodylians, particularly *Purussaurus neivensis*, played a crucial role in predation.

## *Purussaurus neivensis*: The Apex Predator

*Purussaurus neivensis*, a giant crocodylian related to modern caimans, grew to approximately seven meters (23 feet) in length and weighed around 1,800 kilograms. Its size positioned it at the top of the food chain, where it may have regulated herbivore populations across the ecosystem. This suggests that giant crocodylians like *Purussaurus* were not just passive members of the ecosystem but active shapers of ancient tropical communities.

## Fossil Evidence of Predation

To determine which predators were actively hunting, researchers examined fossilized herbivore remains for bite and tooth marks. These traces provide direct evidence of predator-prey interactions, offering insights beyond anatomical assumptions.

The study analyzed fossils dating from 10.5 to 16 million years ago, revealing a high frequency of marks likely made by *Purussaurus*. This suggests the crocodylian was a dominant predator in these tropical ecosystems.

The findings were published in the *Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology*, shedding light on the ecological role of giant crocodylians in South America's ancient past.
