Researchers have uncovered a groundbreaking method to retrieve genetic material from ancient parchment manuscripts without causing any damage. This innovation transforms historic documents into unexpected genetic archives, offering clues about ancient trade routes, livestock history, and the origins of manuscripts dating back over a thousand years.

## A Non-Destructive Technique

The technique involves using a dry cytology brush, similar to those used in medical Pap smears, to gently collect cellular material from the parchment. This method leaves the manuscript intact while allowing researchers to extract and analyze DNA. The genetic information preserved in the parchment can provide insights into the evolution of domesticated animals, the development of different breeds, and livestock diseases over time.

## Testing the Method

To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, researchers collected samples from 91 manuscripts housed in the Rubenstein Library at Duke University. These documents originated from various locations, including England and Ethiopia, and were produced between the late eighth and early 20th centuries. The sampling process is simple and non-invasive, making it a viable option for studying valuable and culturally significant artifacts.
